When we talk about sales tax compliance, the term nexus refers to a responsibility to collect and remit sales tax in a specific state. The concept may seem pretty simple: You need to collect sales tax in states where you have a substantial physical presence. However, it’s not as straight forward as you may think. Most states actually make their own rules and define “presence” in different ways. Trying to determine if you have enough of a presence based on each state’s individual definition can get confusing.
